In 1978, at the age of 18 Cheryl then known as Cheryl Peart, made her debut with the Bob Braun show on WLWT-TV in Cincinnati, Ohio and was dubbed “America’s Coupon Queen.” Braun was so impressed that he offered her a position as a regular on the show. Within days another offer was made where Shuman appeared nationally on the popular television series “PM MAGAZINE.”

As an entrepreneur and the nation’s youngest syndicated television journalist, her couponing and refunding system made her a branding expert with America’s biggest corporate brands. Shuman’s career was cut short by a near fatal car crash that ended her career.

Transforming herself, Cheryl served an apprenticeship with Dr. Michael Byars of London, Ohio and survived with her backup plan as a Licensed Optician. She moved to California and married Extra TV and Fox News reporter Phil Shuman.

After a chance meeting with Michael Jackson, Shuman became the darling of the film and television industry by making house calls with her eyewear to the most famous faces in the world.

Beginning in 1984, “Optician to the Stars”, Cheryl Shuman, was one of the pioneers in marketing the fashion industry to the entertainment industry.

As an Optician having direct “eye to eye” contact, Shuman, realized the power of celebrity and how that power can make a designer or product a household name overnight. Shuman is single handedly credited with some of the biggest trendsetters in the history of sunglasses and eyewear. A True Rags-to-Riches Documentary About The Real Beverly Hillbilly

It was the American Dream that turned into a nightmare. Cheryl Shuman grew up as a child of poverty in Buena Vista, Ohio. Her first job at age six was selling vegetables at a roadside stand, working in the tobacco fields, crocheting ponchos and tutoring classmates. After that a variety of her extremely early work experience expanded from being a maid’s helper to starting her own Scottish terrier kennel by age 12. A guidance counselor and guardian angel noticed her intellect and striking good looks and entered her in a number of beauty and scholarship pageants.

At the age of 18, she was discovered by the Bob Braun show where overnight she became known as America’s Coupon Queen. She then went on to become a nationally respected television reporter for “PM Magazine.” After a near fatal car accident, she lost everything.

With only $17 in her pocket, Cheryl arrived in southern California and slept in her car. Three weeks later, a chance meeting with superstar Michael Jackson, inspired her to start her own business. Word of mouth referrals led to Cheryl being known as the “Optician to the Stars” and had her working on nearly every film and television production.

This business, Starry Eyes, catapulted Shuman back into the jet-set life of the rich and famous, and into a disastrous liason with a well-known film star, where she once again lost it all in one of Hollywood's biggest scandals with Steven Seagal, Anthony Pellicano, Marty Singer and the Gambino Crime Family.

After Steven Seagal and his thugs were served with a restraining order, his power team set forth on a mission to destroy her credibility. Feeling that her presence would endanger others, she was turned away from numerous domestic violence shelters. Due to the notoriety of the case and the fact that the O.J. Simpson trial was at it’s peak, the tabloid media was hungry for a fresh meaty story.

Even with a restraining order in force, there was no protection from the harassment of the Anthony Pellicano the Celebrity Thug aka Private Investigator hired by the star and accompanying media attention. As series of legal maneuvers from Marty Singer forced Shuman to drop the restraining order, the star’s "associates" placed a call to Children's Protective Services, stating that Shuman, who had been severely beaten in an attack in the parking garage at her home, was now unable to provide a safe and stable home for her children. Once involved, the agency gave her a choice of either allowing the state to take her children, or putting them in a safe place with their father. Cheryl chose the latter.

Having lost her family, her business, her home and credibility, Shuman gave up on the system and illegally obtained a false identification card, driver's license and passport to go underground and live as another person for three years.

After hearing that other women had come forward during those three years alleging similar instances of violence and abuse from the star, Shuman felt safe in now returning to Los Angeles, to try to rebuild her life and get her family back. Her first effort was donating a pair of her signature design sunglasses used as a prop in the movie Evita. Upon review, she noticed that a rhinestone was missing. With only a few hours until the live charity auction, she decided to drive downtown, to replace the stone herself and still make it to the charity event.

Bad luck, as she was about to open the door to her car, she heard tires screeching and people screaming as she was struck down by a hit and run driver. Whisked away by ambulance to the hospital, it was thought that the man may have been hired by the actor to silence her, but it turned out to be an illegal immigrant, with no insurance, no drivers license and being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Unconscious and unable to respond with her name, the police and emergency room personnel went through her purse where they found the illegal identification. Although, Shuman was a victim, she was placed under arrest, thrown behind bars and sentenced to six months in jail and six months house arrest, where she became house mates with Heidi Fleiss, Victoria Sellars, Robert Downey Jr., Christian Slater, Susan McDougal and some infamous murderers among others in "high power". Thrust into the underbelly of Hollywood society, she learned about power, money and sex and how it runs Hollywood. Upon her release from jail, $1.27 in her pocket and under house arrest, she had no contact with the outside world.

She discovered the Internet through a friend's computer and placed an ad on an Internet dating service. Lonely and alone, she made online buddies, who helped her through this difficult period. While sharing her story with someone from her "buddy list" she found an "angel investor." Impressed by her honesty and will to survive, this man, a multi-billionaire decided to provide her with venture capital. When nearly all was lost, this rescue by an "angel investor" gave Shuman $1 million to rebuild her life and company and gives new meaning to the phrase, " a happy ending." Shuman, who after being threatened with extortion not only by former jail mates, but by those she trusted most, has decided to now come forward with her story. Rather than seeing it as a negative, she has chosen to hold her head high and be proud of the fact that she has survived what most would not. After regaining custody of her children, Shuman purchased a home in her former neighborhood.

Shuman’s story reads like a Hollywood happy ending. She was recently contacted by her natural parents who were reunited and remarried. In a Romeo and Juliet type story her parents married but separated permanently when Cheryl was 18 months old. When her parents reunited, they reached out to find their daughter, Cheryl. The family met face to face for the first time in 40 years. Her parents remarried on Valentine’s Day 2004 and returned to their hometown. The happy ending to Shuman’s autobiographical documentary currently in production entitled, “Rich Little Poor Girl” was developed, produced and filmed throughout Appalachia providing jobs and training for area residents. It is the first project produced under Shuman’s production company “Weaseldog Productions.”

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths." (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Much of the wisdom of Proverbs is directed to the young man. The oft repeated "my son" phrase sets the context for what follows. The picture is of a father offering wise advice to the son. The father warns about those things in life such as wine, sensual pleasure, and evil companions that can hinder the boy from the desired goals. In the passage above he points him toward the Lord.

Actually, the truths taught here would be useful for one at any stage of life and for one of any gender. However, life is especially frightening to that young boy who is trying to become a man. The uncertainties of the future often overwhelm him. During this time he is receiving advice from worldly friends. So, son here is the secret to ultimate success.

"Trust in the Lord". Do not place your trust in evil companions (Proverbs 1:10), nor precious possessions (Proverbs 1:13), nor brute power (Proverbs 1:11, for they lead to heartache. Do not look on the wine for it is a mocker (Proverbs 23:29-35). Keep yourself far from the harlot (Proverbs 5:3-11) for she will lead to death. Do not trust in these tangible objects, but believe in the invisible, but living God!

"With all of your heart" - Yield the decisions of life to him - your marriage and your career. Give God all of your heart. Do not withhold any area of your life from the Lord. Do not compromise with God by saying "Well I'll give up my bad friends, but keep my wine." Make a bold and daring move and give your all to the Lord.

"Lean not on your own understanding". Do not be arrogant for the Lord knows best. Listen to your mother and your father - the voice of experience. (Proverbs 1:8) You are not wise enough to be your own guide.

In all your ways acknowledge Him and He Will direct your paths. My son, God is there for you and your welfare. He will help you during those challenging times and through all of the storms. He will help you to make the right decisions and lead you in the right way. God can be your security and help you to face any challenge!

What a great motto for life! Live by it!

Pellicano Attacks Began Immediately.

Over a decade ago, I was the first person to go on record for the abuse and harrassment dealt out by Anthony Pellicano. This included getting a restraining order against Seagal and his thugs. Although they have long denied it, Marty Singer, Julius Nasso and Steven Seagal hired Pellicano to put together a knock down packet and harass not only me, but my family and my two small children.

There are several stories I could share with you from my car catching on fire when I tried to start it with my children inside to receiving photos of my children with their death certificates and blood splattered on photos of them at their school playground to several instances where I was attacked by "thugs"..... Could it have been someone like A. Proctor that also was hired to attack Anita Busch for covering Seagal's connections to the mafia?

Whether it was Proctor or another thug, the method of operation for these guys is quite well known. The sad thing is that very few people have had the courage to speak out. To speak out, you risk your life, your family's lives, your reputation, career and everything else you can imagine.

I have been fortunate in that regard. Although I was nearly killed, my name and reputation dragged through the mud, I'm still here. I survived. Now, almost a decade later, the truth is coming out. Many, including Anthony Pellicano and Julius Nasso are serving their time in prison.

After going underground and living as other people for my safety for three years, I met many other victims that had lost their lives as they had known them. My primary interest here is giving a voice to the "everyday" victims of Anthony Pellicano. The media is quick to discuss all of the various "high rollers" in Hollywood, from Steven Seagal, Brad Grey, John McTiernan etc., I know all of these people. But what about the aspiring actresses and others that were seriously violated by this man. I was a victim or I should say survivor. I was one of the first, if not THE first person to go on the record about the evils of these men 12 years ago. When I filed my restraining order against Steven Seagal, Marty Singer and Anthony Pellicano were the first people to start a campaign of harrassment against me. It almost got me killed, nearly ruined my life and yet, I'm still here... About VideoEgg.com:

VideoEgg was born, well hatched really, in early 2005 when David Lerman, Matt Sanchez and Kevin Sladek were trying to crack the code on all things video (codecs, drivers and devices oh my!). At the time, the three Yale grads were involved in a social venture that was matching non-profit organizations who needed public service announcements (PSAs) with a nationwide network of filmmakers who were itching to make video with their cool new digital cameras and desktop NLEs.

After a few projects sifting through hundreds of uploaded video files in just about a million obscure formats it became clear that man, this video stuff was hard. With all of the different devices, editors, encoders, and players, there really wasn't a simple, foolproof way for people to get video on to the web. They all agreed that posting video should be as easy as uploading a photo, so they set out to design and build the VideoEgg Publisher which launched at DEMOFall in 2005.

Since then we've expanded the vision, focusing on other challenges around video publishing, editing, distributing and remixing. We've added some more smart folks to the team and we're all committed to creating powerful, yet simple, solutions for online video. We believe that everyone's got something to say and that, by giving them a truly easy way to say it we can grease the wheels of democratized media.

Originally located in New Haven, Connecticut, facing the prospect of another winter with "Noreasters" and hearing the call of manifest destiny, VideoEgg migrated to the milder climate of San Francisco, California and is currently nesting in a little neighborhood called South Park where we occasionally grab lunch or share beers with our friends at: Odeo, Ruby Red Labs and Ioda.

America's millions of baby boomers are looking for eyeglasses that reflect who they are

In Ben Franklin's day, elders with failing vision wore ready-made spectacles, primitive magnifying glasses in various strengths to help them read or sew.

Now, readers are becoming chic with a momentum made possible only by the sheer numbers of never-say-old baby boomers.

Each year from now until 2010, manufacturers expect about 4 million people to turn 40, the magic age when small print grows fuzzy. The industry is banking that this generation, never one to succumb quietly, will demand eyeglasses that are fun, easy to get and, naturally, all about them.

Just like Levis in the '70s, running shoes in the '80s and business cards in the '90s, readers for baby boomers are "one more way to express who you are," said James Spina, editor in chief of 20/ 20 Magazine, an eyewear trade publication.

"They're the hottest accessory in the industry," he said.

Beyond the plain vanilla glass ovals that sit on drugstore racks, ready-to-wear readers can be found in rhinestone, tiger print, and rainbow frames. There are funky retro rounds, serious small rectangles, foldables and wafer-thin glasses that fit into an out- sized lipstick case.

There are stick-on plastic magnifiers, sunglass readers and readers tinted to make eyes look whiter.

Ink and Eyesight

Linda Hall, 53, a retired executive from San Diego, received a pair of reading glasses concealed in a super-sized ballpoint pen for her birthday eight months ago. She wears them over her contacts and always takes them to the golf course.

"I use my pen to tally up my score and use the glasses to see the little numbers," she said.

Unlike a pair of custom-ground prescription glasses, which can cost anywhere from $60 to $400, the molded plastic readers come in preset strengths, varying in magnification from +1 to +4 in increments of .25. Both lenses are the same.

They cost as little as $7 in drugstores and grocery stores. Optical quality designer versions can run from $40 to $80 in upscale department stores, specialty stores and on the Internet.

In the last five years, ready-to-wear reading glasses have exploded threefold into a $332-million retail market, which will only grow as boomers become prey to presbyopia, the inevitable and incurable phenomenon that causes the lenses of a person's eyes to thicken and lose their ability to focus.

Lots of people notice when their arms suddenly become too short to hold a printed page far enough away to bring the words into focus. But they have neither the time nor the money to visit an eye doctor and order expensive frames. Even then, some can't find the style they want.

Mary Beth Lanassa, 53, of Ohio, was vacationing with her husband, Don, in New Orleans several years ago when they stumbled on a store with a very large sign: "Reading Glasses to Go." She entered, hoping to find an inexpensive pair of bifocal sunglasses to help her see the dashboard when she was behind the wheel and to navigate when Don was driving.

"He'd say, `Get the map! Get the map!' I'd have to throw off my sunglasses and put my regular reading glasses on," she said.

She left the store with three pairs of $50 sun readers. "They were a nice, dark color," she said. "I could sit in the car and see all the buttons and when I looked up, I could drive."

Based on her happy experience, she and Don now own a specialty store themselves in Mansfield, Ohio, and sell readers over the Internet at www. readingglassesplus.com.

Plenty of Readers

Besides sun readers, Mary Beth owns half-readers (the Ben Franklin look), full readers (magnifiers from top to bottom) and bifocal readers (clear on top, magnifiers below). She likes the bifocals because she can keep them on her face and walk around without the seasick feeling she gets from full readers.

She matches her outfits with frames in tortoise shell, green, red and the "really crazy ones" that are hand painted. During the day, she wears the 1.25 strength and the stronger 1.5 late at night.

Once illegal to sell without a license, non-prescription readers remain mildly controversial among eye doctors. While some see no harm in readers and will even recommend them, others believe they are dangerous.

The vast majority of people do not have identical vision in both eyes and will experience strain when the magnification in both lenses is the same.

However, Peter Shaw-McMinn, assistant professor at Southern California College of Optometry , said the main problem isn't in the glasses themselves. "It's that people who get them don't realize it's been so long since they had an eye exam, or they don't get eye exams at all."

Examinations are the only way to detect some diseases that can cause blindness such as glaucoma or macular degeneration, he said. The American Public Health Association is also concerned about hypertension and diabetes, under-diagnosed diseases that can be detected through an eye exam.

Some readers now carry a label warning they are not intended to replace prescribed corrective lenses or regular examinations by an eye care professional.

It Has To Be Right

For many baby boomers, the basic problem has been finding the right look.

"The biggest complaint I hear is that a lot of these drugstore glasses have no style," said Los Angeles optician Cheryl Shuman, a self-described "optician to the stars." She said consumers who want the celebrity look can scan their own photos into her Web site (www.StarryEyes.com) and virtually try on any one of 3,000 pairs of glasses in celebrity images.

Her custom tints can simulate under-eye concealer with flesh tint over dark circles. A 5% blue tint can also make the whites of a person's eyes appear whiter and brighter.

Because there are so many aging boomers, she expects readers to replace sunglasses as her biggest moneymaker next season.

"There is such a demand and such little supply," she said. "It's a generation that demands fashion and wants to stay looking as young as possible."

Dispensing opticians measure clients’ eyes, including the distance between the centers of the pupils and the distance between the surface and the lens. For customers without prescriptions, dispensing opticians may use a lensometer to record eyeglass measurements. They also may obtain a customer’s previous record or verify a prescription with the examining optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Dispensing opticians prepare work orders that give ophthalmic laboratory technicians information needed to grind and insert lenses into a frame. The work order includes prescriptions for lenses and information on their size, material, color, and style. Some dispensing opticians grind and insert lenses themselves. After the glasses are made, dispensing opticians verify that the lenses have been ground to specifications. Then they may reshape or bend the frame, by hand or using pliers, so that the eyeglasses fit the customer properly and comfortably. Some also fix, adjust, and refit broken frames. They instruct clients about adapting to, wearing, or caring for eyeglasses.

Some dispensing opticians specialize in fitting contacts, artificial eyes, or cosmetic shells to cover blemished eyes. To fit contact lenses, dispensing opticians measure the shape and size of the eye, select the type of contact lens material, and prepare work orders specifying the prescription and lens size. Fitting contact lenses requires considerable skill, care, and patience. Dispensing opticians observe customers’ eyes, corneas, lids, and contact lenses with special instruments and microscopes. During several visits, opticians show customers how to insert, remove, and care for their contacts. Opticians do all this to ensure that the fit is correct.

Dispensing opticians keep records on customers’ prescriptions, work orders, and payments; track inventory and sales; and perform other administrative duties.

Working Conditions Dispensing opticians work indoors in attractive, well-lighted, and well-ventilated surroundings. They may work in medical offices or small stores where customers are served one at a time. Some work in large stores where several dispensing opticians serve a number of customers at once. Opticians spend a lot of time on their feet. If they prepare lenses, they need to take precautions against the hazards associated with glass cutting, chemicals, and machinery.

Most dispensing opticians work a 40-hour week, although some work longer hours. Those in retail stores may work evenings and weekends. Some work part time.

Employment Dispensing opticians held about 63,000 jobs in 2002. About 2 out of 5 worked in health and personal care stores, including optical goods stores. Many of these stores offer one-stop shopping. Customers may have their eyes examined, choose frames, and have glasses made on the spot. Another 2 out of 5 dispensing opticians worked in offices of physicians or other health practitioners for ophthalmologists or optometrists who sell glasses directly to patients. Some work in optical departments of department stores or other general merchandise stores, such as warehouse clubs and superstores.

Training Employers usually hire individuals with no background as an optician or those who have worked as ophthalmic laboratory technicians. The employers then provide the required training. (See the statement on ophthalmic laboratory technicians elsewhere in the Handbook.) Most dispensing opticians receive training on the job or through apprenticeships lasting 2 or more years. Some employers, however, seek people with postsecondary training in the field.

Knowledge of physics, basic anatomy, algebra, geometry, and mechanical drawing is particularly valuable, because training usually includes instruction in optical mathematics, optical physics, and the use of precision measuring instruments and other machinery and tools. Dispensing opticians deal directly with the public, so they should be tactful, pleasant, and communicate well. Manual dexterity and the ability to do precision work are essential.

Large employers usually offer structured apprenticeship programs; small employers provide more informal, on-the-job training. In the 21 States that require dispensing opticians to be licensed, individuals without postsecondary training work from 2 to 4 years as apprentices. Apprenticeship or formal training is offered in most States as well.

Apprentices receive technical training and learn office management and sales. Under the supervision of an experienced optician, optometrist, or ophthalmologist, apprentices work directly with patients, fitting eyeglasses and contact lenses. In States requiring licensure, information about apprenticeships and licensing procedures is available from the State board of occupational licensing.

Formal training in the field is offered in community colleges and a few colleges and universities. In 2002, the Commission on Opticianry Accreditation accredited 22 programs that awarded 2-year associate degrees. There also are shorter programs of 1 year or less. Some States that offer a license to dispensing opticians allow graduates to take the licensure exam immediately upon graduation; others require a few months to a year of experience.

Dispensing opticians may apply to the American Board of Opticianry (ABO) and the National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) for certification of their skills. Certification must be renewed every 3 years through continuing education. Those licensed in States where licensing renewal requirements include continuing education credits may use proof of their renewed State license to meet the recertification requirements of the ABO. Likewise, the NCLE will accept proof of renewal from any State that has contact lens requirements.

Many experienced dispensing opticians open their own optical stores. Others become managers of optical stores or sales representatives for wholesalers or manufacturers of eyeglasses or lenses.

Other Qualifications Advancement Job Outlook Employment of dispensing opticians is expected to increase about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2012 as demand grows for corrective lenses. The number of middle-aged and elderly persons is projected to increase rapidly. Middle age is a time when many individuals use corrective lenses for the first time, and elderly persons generally require more vision care than others.

Fashion, too, influences demand. Frames come in a growing variety of styles and colors—encouraging people to buy more than one pair. Demand also is expected to grow in response to the availability of new technologies that improve the quality and look of corrective lenses, such as antireflective coatings and bifocal lenses without the line that is visible in old-style bifocals. Improvements in bifocal, extended-wear, and disposable contact lenses also will spur demand.

The need to replace those who leave the occupation will result in additional job openings. Nevertheless, the number of job openings will be limited because the occupation is small. Dispensing opticians are vulnerable to changes in the business cycle, because eyewear purchases often can be deferred for a time.

Earnings Median annual earnings of dispensing opticians were $25,600 in 2002. The middle 50 percent earned between $19,960 and $33,530. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $16,310, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $43,490. Median annual earnings in the industries employing the largest numbers of dispensing opticians in 2002 were as follows:
